Gleason Park and the surrounding roads in Indian Harbour Beach have recently seen the installation of advanced flock cameras, a state-of-the-art surveillance technology aimed at enhancing safety and security within the community.Three were authorized by City Council for installation in Gleason Park and the Beach parks, purchased in January, 2024.
City Manager John Coffey signed a proposal last March to install two License Plate Readers and eight further security cameras at Algonquin Sports Complex. This was approved by City Council as part of the fiscal year 2026 budget process.
Controversial? Yes. Complaints have been received, and I personally have been getting emails since announcing my candidacy. I have spoken to police officers and seen the online 'mis-use' videos as well.
Do they save toddlers and the elderly from potential harm? Or do they steal whatever privacy we have left?
In the era of "everyone" carries a cell phone which is trackable as are laptops, tablets, a plethora of ring cameras and even trackable tire sensors, are we really compromising anything more?
Well, we have them......
